Kyle Baker

Knowing many people in the industry, we have a lot of comic books that find their way to out front door.  Some are good and some are... well, maybe that's better left unsaid.  But one that I've come across recently really impressed me, and the more I looked into the artist and what he has done, the more impressed I became.

The comic book that caught my eye was called The Bakers.  It's basically about the trials and tribulation of a modern day family called the Bakers, complete with dread-lock sportin' Dad, beautiful blond Mom, and a gaggle of little kids who provide the entertainment.  What I really appreciated, though, was the style in which the whole work was executed, and if you've seen the movie The Incredibles, that might give you a clue.  Artist Kyle Baker employs a mid-century contemporary style which is apparent in every detail - even his signature.  I love it.  And the stories are amusing, too.

So I looked into other work of Kyle Baker, and it turns out that he is both a Harvey and Eisner Award winner (the top awards in the industry).  In addition, he has a broad range of experience, from pre-production work on Shrek to a number of his own comic series (King David, The Bakers, and many more) to working as writer and director for the 2002 Looney Tunes movie to a serious biography of slave Nat Turner..

Baker is an individual who is both a great writer and a great artist, who can be both funny and serious, light and deep.

 Certainly someone worth looking up.
